Tensions between North and South Korea could be linked to US elections - Analyst
Russia may try to influence the US elections by escalating the conflict between North Korea and South Korea. But Moscow does not need a large-scale war, stated Volodymyr Fesenko, Chairman of the Board of the Penta Center for Applied Political Studies, in a commentary for RBC-Ukraine.
He recalled that in the summer, there were rumors about Russia's attempts to complicate the position of US President Joe Biden and indirectly Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election in November.
"They are not interested in a large-scale war but would like to provoke a symbolic conflict on the Korean border. To show the weakness of the Democrats. To give Trump an argument, saying that if he were president, there wouldn't be a war, but under Biden, 'one war follows another.' I don't rule out such a scenario," said Fesenko.
But, as the political scientist pointed out, only a demonstrative conflict is possible, but not a large-scale war, which Pyongyang's allies do not need.
The conflict between the DPRK and South Korea
Last week, Pyongyang began actively threatening Seoul with an armed conflict. The reason was leaflets with “slander” that, according to the DPRK, were distributed by South Korean drones.
North Korea has also placed its artillery on alert at the border with South Korea.
