Negotiations to end war will begin, but Putin will not stop military actions - Expert
Negotiations to end Russia's war against Ukraine could begin in the coming months. However, even after the dialogue starts, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not stop the military actions, states political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko in a comment to the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.
The political scientist noted that it is currently impossible to determine the date for the start of negotiations to end the war. However, a more likely scenario is that the dialogue will begin no earlier than March, considering the pace of negotiations between US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Fesenko also pointed out that it is impossible to predict when a result will be achieved. Currently, there is a lot of talk about a result within 100 days. These timelines are desirable for Trump. It would also be advantageous for Putin to achieve a result before May 9.
According to him, most experts are very skeptical about the possibility of reaching any agreement in such a short time.
"Why? Because negotiations may start. This is highly likely. But with high probability, almost certainly, Putin will not stop military actions. This is Putin's style. We saw this in 2014 and 2015. I am not even mentioning the current large-scale war," emphasized Fesenko.
He explained that Putin could engage in negotiations and try to exert pressure on the negotiation process through military actions. Right now, the Kremlin leader has no intention of stopping the war. This is evident from the situation in Donbas.
"So, the scenario where negotiations begin and there is a cessation of hostilities – unfortunately, no. We can't relax here. Most likely, there will be both negotiations and the continuation of the war at the same time," Fesenko believes.
Rumors about the start of negotiations to end the war
Earlier, the Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, Andriy Kovalenko, warned that information with dates for the start of negotiations and the end of the war between Ukraine and Russia would soon appear in the media.
He emphasized that such information circulating online would not be accurate.
