Officials in US President Donald Trump’s administration understand that they made a mistake regarding the prospects of ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. A quick peace has not been achieved, states political strategist Taras Zahorodnii in a comment to the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.

“The State Department apparatus understands this, which is why there’s such tension with Witkoff (US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff – ed.),” the expert said. “I’m confident that Elon Musk and Witkoff will soon be distanced from Trump. An apparatus has been formed, and they see the risks. Rubio also fully understands that things are not as simple as they once seemed.”

He added that the US had given the Russians an opportunity to exit the war without losing face, but they refused. According to the political strategist, Washington now finds itself in a situation where it cannot stop supporting Ukraine.

“They (the Russians – ed.) keep pushing their narrative, even with this so-called ceasefire linked to halting arms supplies to Ukraine. The EU has said that’s not going to happen. Moreover, the US has also said it won’t happen. It’s not that simple. The US is in a position where it is compelled to help, especially now that funding is available. Just try to cancel a $50 billion arms procurement deal,” Zahorodnii emphasized.

Trump wanted a quick peace

Even before winning the presidential election, Donald Trump claimed that on his first day in the White House, he would bring Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table. He insisted he could quickly end the war.

Later, Western media reported that Trump’s team aimed to establish peace within the first 100 days of his presidency. Various versions of Trump’s so-called “peace plans” were circulated online. However, none of these plans have been officially announced.

The US has launched a negotiation process, acting as a mediator between Ukraine and Russia. The two sides are not engaged in direct peace talks.

Two rounds of talks took place in Saudi Arabia, involving representatives from Ukraine and the US, as well as Washington and Moscow. The main focus was on a possible ceasefire.
