'Cynical calculation': Official explains purpose of Russian strikes on Ukraine's gas infrastructure
It is no secret to Ukraine that Russia constantly tries to attack critical infrastructure, states Mykhailo Podolyak, Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, in a comment to the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.
According to him, during the morning shelling, Russia aimed to inflict maximum damage on gas storage facilities and gas transportation systems in western Ukraine.
"You are absolutely right, Russia is generally attacking critical infrastructure, this is no secret to us, but yes, it wants to inflict maximum damage on gas storage facilities and gas transportation systems in the western regions of Ukraine. It's a cynical calculation to show - you stopped the transit, and we got our revenge," said Podolyak.
Attack on Ukraine on January 15
This morning, the Russian army once again attempted to hit Ukraine's critical infrastructure. There were reports of missile and drone threats.
It is known that Russia launched 43 missiles and 74 drones at Ukraine overnight. Air defense forces destroyed 30 missiles and 47 drones, while 27 drones did not reach their targets. The gas infrastructure in the Kharkiv, Lviv, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions was under attack.
We also reported that despite the attack, the gas supply for the people is continuing without interruption. Specifically, Naftogaz emphasized that all of the company's facilities are operating as usual.
