Analyst explains purpose of new contact group
A new contact group will develop a unified European position on ending the war between Ukraine and Russia. With this position, it will be possible to appeal to US President-elect Donald Trump, stated political analyst Ihor Reiterovych in a commentary to the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.
"Creating such a contact group could provide Ukraine with the necessary momentum to coordinate with Europeans, establish a unified position, and then appeal to Trump with this position, appeal to the plan that the United States can offer," Reiterovych said.
He clarified that such a scenario is possible if the Contact Group consists of constructive countries.
"The initiative itself is not bad. It’s likely a gesture and signal towards Europe. But we’ll see how the Americans will react to it," the analyst concluded.
New contact group
Yesterday, December 9, German chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz proposed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the creation of a contact group involving Poland, France, Britain, and Germany.
According to Merz, such a group could work on a unified strategy for ending the war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said that Ukraine had already organized such a group, with the first meeting scheduled for December.
Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Ihor Zhovkva stated that the inaugural meeting would address, among other issues, security guarantees for Ukraine before it joins NATO.
