Ukraine is currently seeking ammunition for F-16 fighter jets to shoot down jet-powered drones. The issue was discussed with Germany and Poland, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a joint briefing with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Kyiv.
"Right now, the success rate in shooting down jet-powered drones is around 50-55%, sometimes 60%. F-16s are helping significantly, and 20mm ammunition is working well. We are now working to have 5,000-6,000 rounds of this ammunition available per day," the president said.
He noted that this is a very difficult task, but Ukraine is working on it.
"We thank Germany for supporting this effort. This will definitely strengthen us," the president added.
He also said that he had discussed assistance with this type of ammunition with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
In addition, talks will be held with French President Emmanuel Macron.
"Norway and Finland will also help us. We are working on getting the F-16s armed. It is very difficult, but nevertheless," Zelenskyy said.
It should be noted that US-made F-16 fighter jets have been effectively shooting down Russia’s new jet-powered drones, but a significant number of the aircraft have been in Europe for repairs for extended periods.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered officials to review agreements with partners on supplying ammunition for F-16s, as well as missiles for air defense systems.
Ukraine is seeking to purchase tens of thousands of 20mm rounds for F-16s to counter jet-powered drones.
It is also known that Belgium will transfer three F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine by the end of this year.
