Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will take part in a meeting focused on ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz. Ukraine’s experience could prove useful, said Zelenskyy.

"Today I will participate in a meeting on Hormuz: many leaders are gathering to coordinate efforts to guarantee security in the Strait of Hormuz. The world now clearly understands where this strait is and why it is so important,” he said.

Zelenskyy compared the situation in the Strait of Hormuz to what took place in the Black Sea in 2022 and 2023. Russian forces attempted to block Ukraine’s maritime routes, but Ukraine disrupted those plans and defeated Russia’s fleet.

The President suggested that Ukraine’s experience could be valuable for its partners, noting that the country has extensive expertise in unblocking sea routes.

"Now everyone in the world clearly sees that maritime security is a global value, not just someone else’s problem. Security must be defended collectively, and we hope that our partners will draw strong conclusions from the current challenges," Zelenskyy said.

Meanwhile, on April 17, Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial vessels. However, the strait is open only during a ceasefire in Lebanon. A day earlier, on April 16, media reports said Iran was considering allowing ships to pass freely through the Omani section of the strait as part of talks with the United States.

Global energy prices dropped significantly after Iran announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The price of Brent crude fell below $90 per barrel, followed by declines in other oil benchmarks.
