The leadership of Belarus must stay alert and understand that in the event of any aggressive actions against Ukraine, there will be consequences, states President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The head of state visited Slavutych, where he met with community leaders from northern regions — Kyiv and Chernihiv regions. The discussion focused on support for the population and strengthening defense measures.
"This concerns defensive structures — fortifications and others. Border security will also be further strengthened, as well as our defense and security forces operating in this direction — against Chernihiv and Kyiv from the territory of neighboring Belarus, which Russia is very eager to pull further into this war, as well as from the Bryansk region," Zelenskyy said.
He emphasized that Ukraine has the capacity for strengthening defenses and carrying out preventive operations against Russian territory from which threats may emerge.
"We remember that in 2022, there was also an offensive from the territory of Belarus. We will not forget this. Ukraine’s Defense and Security Forces, and our intelligence, know what threats exist and how to respond — fairly and decisively," the president stressed.
On May 20, Zelenskyy said the aggressor state has five scenarios for expanding the war in the Chernihiv–Kyiv direction. He noted that Ukraine will increase forces in this area in response to the potential threat.
Due to this, large-scale security measures have begun today in the Chernihiv region, Kyiv region, Zhytomyr region, Volyn region, and Rivne region.
RBC-Ukraine also reported that Russia has intensified attempts to drag Belarus further into military actions against Ukraine and has been in contact with Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko on the matter.
