Russia faces no consequences for its crimes, and the only way to stop the aggressor is to reliably protect the airspace of countries under threat, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Russia not only avoids accountability but remains a welcome guest

The President stated that Russia’s deliberate drone incursions into Poland went unpunished, just like its attacks on Ukraine with devastating consequences, such as the strike on Yarova or the attack on the capital on August 28.

"And what consequences has Russia faced? Let’s be honest - none. A day before the attack on Poland, the Russians killed 25 people in the village of Yarova in the Donetsk region. Ordinary people. They had come to receive their pensions. These are the very residents of Donbas whom Russia claims to be rescuing," Zelenskyy said.

Against this backdrop, he expressed outrage over the appearance of the Russian flag at the Venice Film Festival.

"But that didn’t stop the Russian flag from appearing at one of the world’s leading art events. Because art is supposedly above politics, above war. Art is for the living at festivals, not for the dead in Ukrainian cities and villages. How is it possible to reward Russians for the war by welcoming them back into the world?" Zelenskyy added.

Zelenskyy believes there are several ways to stop Putin

The President emphasized that Russia must face strong responses to every challenge. Only pressure, including economic, can stop Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

However, Zelenskyy sees another way to stop Russia—by reliably protecting the skies of countries under threat.

"If we, together with our partners, can secure our airspace from strikes on Poland, Romania, Putin will lose the point of his war. Russia will not achieve its goals through ground assaults alone, and at sea, they have already lost the ability to operate," the President concluded.

Zelenskyy believes the US has and can provide Ukraine with air defense systems and combat aircraft to protect the country.

"This will definitely force Russia to stop the war. Especially since Putin’s actions make it clear that this must be done," the President said.

Background

On the night of September 10, over 20 Russian drones violated Polish airspace. Intercepting aviation was deployed to neutralize the threat.

On September 9, the Russian forces dropped an aerial bomb on the village of Yarova in Donbas, killing more than 20 people.
