Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said continued Russian attacks on Ukraine show that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin does not want peace, according to Sky News and BBC.
The Ukrainian president has arrived in Canada, where he is currently holding talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Speaking to the press, Carney said there are conditions in place for achieving a fair and lasting peace. At the same time, he condemned Russia's overnight attack on Kyiv.
Zelenskyy agreed that it was a "very difficult" night for the capital and said that the strikes are "Russia's answer to our peace efforts."
"This shows that Putin doesn't want peace. We want peace. He's a man of war," Zelenskyy said.
At nearly the same time, comments from Putin were made on the other side of the world. The Russian leader said that if Ukraine does not want to resolve everything peacefully, then Russia will achieve all its objectives by military means.
Returning to the issue of a peace deal, Zelenskyy said ending the war requires two key elements: pressure on Russia and sufficient, strong support for Ukraine. He added that while some steps have been taken, further diplomacy is needed.
The president also said he would speak later today with European allies. He added that he hopes to hold a "very important" and "very constructive" meeting with US President Trump tomorrow.
From war to peace
Overnight and early in the morning on December 27, Russian forces carried out another combined attack on Ukraine.
Kyiv and the Kyiv region were the main targets. In the capital, fires, destruction, and other damage were reported in seven districts. The attack caused disruptions to heating and water supplies, and emergency power outages were introduced.
Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that he is traveling to the US. Before that, he visited Canada for talks with Carney. The Canadian prime minister said his country will provide $2.5 billion to Ukraine.
According to media reports, Zelenskyy plans to try to resolve key disagreements over a draft peace agreement during the meeting. He has emphasized that territorial issues will be a central focus of the talks, including the Donbas and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
