Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expects members of parliament to put forward proposals on holding elections in Ukraine, according to the President.

As Zelenskyy said, he spoke on December 10 with representatives of the Ukrainian Parliament, stressing that he would not allow any political speculation against Ukraine.

"If our partners, including our key partner in Washington, talk so much and so specifically about elections in Ukraine, about elections under martial law, then we must provide clear and lawful Ukrainian answers to every question and every doubt," Zelenskyy said.

He added that he expects proposals from Ukrainian lawmakers outlining their views on the issue.

"Security challenges depend on our partners, above all on America. Political and legal challenges require answers from Ukraine. And they will be," the President emphasized.

US demand on elections

US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Politico that Ukraine should hold presidential elections. In his view, Ukrainian officials are using the war to avoid new elections. He added that Ukraine is "not a democracy anymore," because elections have not been held for a long time.

Zelenskyy later said he is ready to hold presidential elections, emphasizing that it depends on two key conditions: security and changes to legislation.

European Commission spokesperson Anita Hipper responded that elections are possible only when circumstances allow, as Russia continues its war against Ukraine.
