Zelenskyy on €50 billion for Ukraine: 'No less important than military assistance and sanctions against Russia'
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanks EU leaders for creating a €50 million fund for Ukraine. He emphasizes on X that financial support is no less important than military assistance and sanctions pressure on Russia.
"Grateful to Charles Michel and EU leaders for establishing the €50 billion Ukraine Facility for 2024-2027," he says.
According to Zelenskyy, it is very important that the decision was made by all 27 leaders, which "once again proves strong EU unity."
"Continued EU financial support for Ukraine will strengthen long-term economic and financial stability, which is no less important than military assistance and sanctions pressure on Russia," he adds.
EU summit
The main issue at the February 1 summit in Brussels was an attempt to reach an agreement on a four-year, €50 billion financial aid package for Ukraine, which was blocked by Hungary at the last European summit in December.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that he was ready to agree to the creation of the Fund for Ukraine, but on the condition that it would be reviewed annually and approved unanimously.
On February 1, EU leaders at the summit approved the allocation of €50 billion for Ukraine under the Ukraine Facility program.
