European countries must provide Ukraine with security guarantees to maintain peace. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy must acknowledge this, states US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, according to Sky News.

Bessent once again reaffirmed that the US wants to place the responsibility for Ukraine's security guarantees on Europe.

At the same time, the secretary clarified that the situation regarding a peace agreement on Russia's war in Ukraine remains unstable.

Security guarantees for Ukraine

The US government has repeatedly stated that it wants European countries to provide security guarantees for Ukraine. Instead, Washington has offered Ukraine a deal on mineral resources.

During a presentation in Kyiv of the rare-earth metals agreement, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent assured that it would serve as a "long-term security shield" for Ukraine.

For his part, US President Donald Trump referred to the agreement as a "backstop" for Ukraine's security.

Meanwhile, Europe is preparing to send its contingent to Ukraine to help maintain peace in the event of a peace agreement between Kyiv and Moscow. Currently, a scenario is being discussed in which Europe could send up to 30,000 soldiers to Ukraine.
