Zelenskyy makes statement on Trump
No one can yet predict what US President-elect Donald Trump will do. But the connection between allies in the United States and Europe must not be lost, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says.
“Yesterday, I spoke with President Trump. It was a productive conversation, good conversation,” he says.
According to him, of course, no one can know yet what his specific actions will be.
“We do hope that America will become stronger. This is the kind of America that Europe needs, and strong Europe is what America needs. This is the connection between allies that must be valued and can't be lost,” Zelenskyy adds.
Zelenskyy's conversation with Trump
On November 6, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a phone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump. Zelensky said the conversation was excellent and an agreement was reached.
Trump promised during the US election campaign that he would quickly end the war but refused to declare his support for Ukraine's victory.
When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the United States in September, Trump initially refused to meet with him, and then during a conversation in New York, he praised his ties to Vladimir Putin. He stated that if he won, the issue would be resolved very quickly
Trump has also criticized the extent of US military support for Ukraine and has consistently railed against NATO allies, which he says do not pay their fair share of defense costs.
There is concern in Kyiv and among Ukraine's allies that the next US president could force the Ukrainians to accept a deal with Putin that implies broad concessions. They also have broader concerns that without clear long-term guarantees for Ukraine's future, Russia could use any halt in hostilities to rebuild its military and prepare for another attack.
