Ukrainian troops are achieving defined goals in the border areas of the Sumy region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

The President held a detailed discussion with Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi regarding activity on the front line.

Since the beginning of 2026, Russian losses on the front have already exceeded 145,000 personnel.

In particular, nearly 86,000 troops have been killed, at least 59,000 have been seriously wounded, and more than 800 Russian servicemen have been taken prisoner.

"In the border areas of the Sumy region, we are achieving defined goals. We continue destroying Russian personnel and equipment in other directions as well. I especially want to thank our drone operators for their precision. Active operations are also ongoing, and the paratroopers and assault troops deserve recognition for them," Zelenskyy said.

Situation on the front line

Analysts note that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are currently seizing the initiative on the battlefield — over recent months, Ukrainian troops have achieved their greatest successes since the incursion into Russia's Kursk region in August 2024.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to regain a significant part of the territories near Kupiansk, liberated more than 400 square kilometers in the south of the country during the winter and spring of 2026, and also advanced in the western part of the Zaporizhzhia region.

Recently, Ukraine's Air Assault Forces reported that the Russian forces' immediate task is to capture one of the two regional centers — Sumy or Kharkiv. The Defense Forces are already recording enemy attempts to advance toward one of them.

At the same time, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are liberating villages in the Kharkiv region and have pushed the Russians back to the border.
