Germany must be among the leaders in developing and implementing security guarantees for Ukraine, stated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Ukrainian President held a meeting with German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, who visited Kyiv.

They discussed strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, financing domestic drone production, and the possibilities of the PURL program for purchasing American weapons for Ukraine.

"Work is ongoing on the purchase of two additional Patriot systems, as well as the delivery of additional German-made IRIS-T air defense systems," the President said.

According to him, special attention was given to diplomatic efforts for peace, tightening sanctions against Russia, and security guarantees.

"The relevant diplomatic work is underway, particularly at the level of national security advisors. We count on Germany to be among the leaders in developing and implementing security guarantees," Zelenskyy emphasized.

The head of state thanked Germany for its support of Ukraine and for providing the largest overall assistance among European countries since the start of Russia’s war.

Security guarantees for Ukraine: Germany’s position

Earlier, German Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil stated that Germany would participate in providing security guarantees to Ukraine together with European partners. However, he noted that negotiations are still at an early stage and should be defined by Kyiv.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, for his part, said that Ukraine must receive security guarantees that would effectively bring it closer to NATO membership.
