Zelenskyy cancels Senate address: Defense Minister and Ukrainian Ambassador's comments
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy canceled his speech at the planned secret briefing in the U.S. Senate because of the war in Ukraine and the situation is constantly changing. In addition, not only issues related to our country were discussed there, according to Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and Ukraine's Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova.
"It's a war, so the situation can change. But I think President Zelenskyy would appreciate and do it whenever it would be possible next time," Umerov says.
According to Markarova, several internal briefings were planned in the Congress, and Zelensky was supposed to speak at one of them.
However, the speech was canceled because they were discussing not only Ukraine but also internal American issues, the ambassador adds.
"Nothing catastrophic happened...There was an idea to take part in one of several briefings if it was possible to join. However, it is precisely because they discussed not only Ukraine but also domestic issues that we did not participate today," the ambassador says.
What happened before
Yesterday, it became known that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy would not participate in a secret briefing in the U.S. Senate. This was announced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
"Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is not going to attend classified briefing virtually anymore because of a last-minute matter," he said.
According to the lawmakers, Zelenskiyy also did not virtually attend the House briefing on Ukraine.
Earlier, Schumer said that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would address U.S. senators on Tuesday via a secure video conference. The conversation was to take place at a secret briefing.
