Prior to this, Zelenskyy held separate talks with US Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, where they discussed the battlefield situation and coordination of potential joint diplomatic efforts by Ukraine, Europe, and the US.

Background

The Washington talks come shortly after Trump’s August 15 meeting in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to media reports, during the summit, the Kremlin presented a list of demands: withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donetsk and Luhansk regions, abandoning NATO membership, recognition of Crimea as Russian, and partial sanctions relief. Moscow also insisted on official status for the Russian language and freedom of activity for the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine.

Reuters reported that in return, Russia suggested freezing the front line in the south and returning some occupied areas of Sumy and Kharkiv regions to Ukraine.
