Zelenskyy announces progress in US position on Ukraine's accession to NATO
The US position on Ukraine's accession to NATO has improved. However, Germany remains skeptical, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
After his visits to Britain, France, Italy, and Germany, the President stated that some countries still want to "keep the doors open" in their relations with Russia.
According to him, the issue of providing long-range weapons remains a sensitive topic for Germany. This is the most painful question for Berlin.
"We talked a lot about Ukraine's future in NATO. The German position is very important because skepticism remains among the Germans. We are closer to NATO with the US than we have ever been. I think we are much closer," Zelenskyy added.
Ukraine's accession to NATO
Ukraine views NATO membership as the most reliable guarantee of protection against a possible repeat attack by Russia.
Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented a victory plan, proposing to invite Ukraine to NATO before the end of the war with Russia.
Kyiv hoped to receive this invitation during the NATO summit in Washington held in July, but the Alliance countries did not take such a step.
According to Ukraine's Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna, the US and Germany opposed the initiative.
Recently, US Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith emphasized that the invitation for Ukraine to join the Alliance is not being discussed in the short term.
