President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held telephone negotiations with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The parties discussed preparations for the 18th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, according to the president’s Telegram channel.

According to Zelenskyy, he thanked Ursula von der Leyen and the European Union for the 17th package of sanctions against Russia and noted that it was a step in the right direction.

“It is important to severely restrict the Russian tanker fleet, which serves to finance killings, as well as all the schemes Russia uses to build up its military industry. The more pressure on Russia, the more motivation Moscow will have to pursue a genuine peace,” he added.

The president noted that the parties also discussed preparations for the next package of EU sanctions against Russia. He added that the most painful points for the Kremlin are oil, energy trade infrastructure, banks, and financial schemes.

Among other issues discussed:

  • yesterday’s conversation with the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump;

  • diplomatic work with partners.

EU sanctions against Russia

After the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the EU introduced sanctions against the terrorist country in order to weaken the aggressor’s economic capabilities and force it to change its policy. The sanctions cover various areas – from trade and finance to transport and energy. The restrictions also affected certain individuals, companies, and banks.

Today, May 20, the EU introduced the 17th package of sanctions against Russia, striking at maritime transport, oil traders, and their foreign accomplices.
