5 reasons why your nails break more often than usual

Shiny and strong nails are not only aesthetic, but also an indicator of health. But what should you do when your nails start to split and break, even for no obvious reason? HuffPost explains.
What are nails made of
Nails are made primarily of keratin, a strong protein that is also the basis of hair and the upper layer of skin. But there are other important components in nails besides keratin.
Here are the main components of nails:
- Keratin is the main protein that forms the nail plate. It gives the nails hardness and protection
- Water. A healthy nail contains about 10-30% water. Water maintains elasticity, but its excess or lack can make nails brittle or soft
- Lipids (fats) retain moisture in the nail plate. They help to maintain flexibility and shine.
- Minerals. Iron, calcium, zinc, and others are needed for healthy nail growth
- Cell layers. The nail plate consists of several layers of flat keratinized cells that fit closely together
Dermatologist Claire Wolinsky says that trauma to the nail matrix can lead to permanent changes in the nail plate.
Healthy nails are only part of your health. Healthy nails should be smooth, without pits and grooves.
Why do nails break
If you notice that your nails break more often than usual, it means that certain changes have occurred in your body.
Nutrition and hydration
Many changes can affect nail health, primarily internal causes such as diet and hydration.
In today's busy world, people often run around all day on business that they sometimes forget to eat and moisturize properly, and this can have a significant impact on nail health.
Stress
Chronic stress can reduce the release of moisture from the body, some of which is necessary for healthy feet.
Improper care
Too rough polishing, improper filing (especially in different directions), and removing gel polish without special tools can lead to splitting of the nail plate.
Excessive washing and excessive disinfection
One of the common reasons why nails break or become weakened is frequent hand washing, dishwashing, or excessive use of hand sanitizers.
These things can dry out your nails, making them brittle and prone to splitting and breaking.
Vitamin and mineral deficiencies
Biotin (vitamin B7) is very important for nail health. Iron, zinc, calcium, and magnesium –a deficiency of these can weaken the nails.
Vitamins A, C, D, and E also play an important role in forming a strong nail plate.
How manicures can damage nails
Gel polish itself can dehydrate and weaken the nail plate, leading to splitting.
If you're struggling with nail splitting but still getting your nails done, it may be time to take a break. It is worth taking breaks from manicures to moisturize the nail plate and give it a chance to recover.
Peeling off nail polish, gel, or acrylic can damage the nail plate. Any improper removal will remove layers of nails, making them thin and weak.
