Younger brother of killed Sinwar becomes new Hamas leader in Gaza – WSJ
Hamas in the Gaza Strip is now led by Mohammed Sinwar – the younger brother of the former leader of the Islamist movement, Yahya Sinwar. The latter was eliminated in 2024, The Wall Street Journal reports.
According to the media source, after the elimination of Yahya Sinwar, Hamas leaders based in Qatar decided to form a "collective leadership council," but the militants of the group located in the Gaza Strip refused this idea and are now operating autonomously under the leadership of Mohammed Sinwar.
WSJ sources also add that Hamas has now begun recruiting new fighters, promising them food and medical assistance for their families. Recruited militants carry out attacks in small groups and use weapons that do not require special military training.
Israeli military officials, for their part, say that Hamas has managed to recruit hundreds of people, mainly in the northern part of the Gaza Strip, in recent months.
Mohammed Sinwar
Mohammed is about 50 years old. He joined Hamas at a young age. However, unlike his brother, he was not imprisoned by Israel, which makes him less "understood" by security services. According to sources, Yahya Sinwar's younger brother mostly acted "in the shadows," earning him the nickname "The Shadow."
Elimination of Yahya Sinwar
Yahya Sinwar was eliminated last year. This information was officially confirmed in October. As the IDF reported, Yahya Sinwar planned and was responsible for the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
The former leader of the Islamist movement was eliminated after spending a year "hiding among the civilian population of Gaza and in Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip."
