Clean doesn’t always mean safe. Even a tidy home can hide allergens that affect your well-being. Simple methods can significantly reduce their amount in the air, according to Martha Stewart.

Vacuum once or twice a week

Frequent vacuuming is key to removing unwanted allergens. You should vacuum weekly, or more often in high-traffic areas or homes with pets.

It is important to use a vacuum equipped with a certified high-efficiency filter and a sealed filtration system. This ensures that allergens remain inside the vacuum instead of being released back into the air through gaps or the hose.

Wipe dust with a damp microfiber cloth

Microfiber has very fine fibers that attract and trap dust instead of just spreading it into the air. It effectively collects common allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, and pollen.

Unlike dry cloths or brushes, microfiber is less likely to release dust back into the air.

How to use it properly:

  • It is better to use a slightly damp cloth — this further reduces dust dispersion
  • Clean from top to bottom so dust does not settle on already cleaned surfaces
  • Wash the cloth after cleaning, otherwise it accumulates allergens
  • Do not use fabric softener, as it reduces microfiber effectiveness

Use air purifiers

Using an air purifier can be especially helpful in rooms where you spend a lot of time, such as the bedroom or living room.

Choose a device that is suitable for the room size and check its clean air delivery rate for proper efficiency.

Wash bedding regularly

Dust mites feed on human skin cells and can live in bedding. Regular weekly washing is important to protect against them.

If pets sleep in your bed, bedding may need to be washed even more often. If the fabric allows, dry bedding at high temperatures.

Clean ventilation systems

Regular cleaning of home ventilation can reduce the risk of allergic reactions. Over time, ventilation ducts accumulate:

  • Dust and fine particles (a major allergy trigger)
  • Pet hair
  • Dust mites
  • Mold (especially in high humidity conditions)

When the system operates, these particles can spread through the home and enter the respiratory system.
