Regular, slow vacuuming at home can significantly reduce the amount of allergens in the air and on surfaces. This is especially important for people who are sensitive to pollen, household dust, or pet hair, according to Real Simple.

Why thorough cleaning at home matters

For many people, numerous triggers can cause allergies. Sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, and irritation often last for a long time.

Slow vacuuming helps reduce indoor allergen levels with minimal effort. Dust mites, pet hair, skin flakes, mold spores, and pollen settle deep into fabrics and on surfaces. Daily activities can release them back into the air, triggering allergies in some people.

Allergens tend to accumulate in areas where dust settles and is not regularly removed. The bedroom is especially important because we spend about one-third of our lives there.

Bedding, pillows, mattresses, and the space under the bed can act as reservoirs for dust mite waste and other particles. Even homes that appear clean may contain hidden allergen reservoirs.

Cleaning technique

Carpets can serve as reservoirs for dust, pet dander, and dust mite allergens, especially in high-traffic areas.

Over time, particles penetrate deep into the fibers. Moving the vacuum too quickly over these surfaces prevents deep cleaning. Many people vacuum fast, but speed can limit effectiveness.

Cleaning carpets too quickly can reduce the amount of dust and allergens removed because the vacuum has less contact time with the fibers.

The recommended vacuuming speed is about 30 centimeters per second, using overlapping strokes. It takes more time but is more effective and thorough.

Equally important as speed is the vacuum itself. It is worth using equipment designed to capture fine particles.

How to reduce allergens

Incorporating a slower pace into your routine and vacuuming surfaces more thoroughly, even if it takes a little longer, will reduce the amount of solid particles in the air.

People with significant allergies should vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture at least once or twice a week, wash bedding weekly in hot water, and increase cleaning frequency in homes with pets or high dust levels. Even people without allergy problems should vacuum weekly and wash bedding regularly.
