You age faster during these 2 periods of life
A recent study by Stanford University has shown that aging does not occur evenly but accelerates during two key stages of life, reports Nature Aging.
At what stages of life does a person age
According to the scientists, this process occurs at the age of 44 and in the early 60s. Researchers analyzed data from over 135,000 molecules and microbes in biological samples from 108 participants over several years.
Changes observed at different ages:
- At 40 years old: Changes were noted in molecules related to alcohol, caffeine, and lipid metabolism, as well as markers associated with cardiovascular and muscle health.
- At 60 years old: Changes included a decline in immunity, alterations in kidney function, and an increase in cellular aging (senescence).
What did the study reveal
According to Michael Snyder, the lead author of the study, the changes observed at age 40 were unexpected but might be linked to stress factors or lifestyle shifts typical of this stage of life.
The dataset used came from 108 individuals who provided blood and other biological samples over several years.
"For instance, nonlinear changes in RNA and protein expression related to aging have been documented," the study explained.
The research team concluded that 81% of the molecules studied exhibited non-linear aging. This means that molecules do not change steadily over the years but instead undergo more rapid shifts at certain life stages.
This discovery suggests that aging is not a uniform process but is characterized by periods of acceleration.
Looking at the average changes across the population, the researchers found that people generally experience faster aging around the age of 44 and in their early 60s.
However, these age ranges vary among individuals, indicating that aging is influenced by factors unique to each person. This finding offers a new perspective on how and when the most significant age-related changes occur.
