Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to strengthen its role in ensuring regional security and development, stating that Beijing is ready to support developing countries, the South China Morning Post reports.

According to the media outlet, speaking at a welcome banquet in the northern city of Tianjin during the SCO summit, the Chinese leader said that the organization had become an “important force in promoting the building of a new type of international relations.”

“At present, the world is undergoing a century-long change at an accelerated pace, and unstable, uncertain, and unpredictable factors have increased significantly. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has an even greater responsibility to maintain regional peace and stability and promote the development and prosperity of all countries,” Xi said.

Chinese President’s remarks came as China seeks to cement its status as a key player among Global South countries.

Analysts believe the summit offers Beijing a chance to strengthen solidarity with developing nations and secure backing for reshaping the international order.

“The SCO will make greater contributions to promoting solidarity and cooperation among member states, gathering the strength of the Global South and promoting the progress of human civilisation,” Xi noted.

The day before, the Chinese President held a series of meetings with world leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, as well as the heads of Armenia and Belarus.

Xi stressed the need to deepen trust, boost multilateral cooperation, and “practice true multilateralism.”

Particular attention was drawn to his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Xi greeted him warmly with both hands and gave him noticeably more time than other leaders.

Putin arrived with a large delegation for a four-day visit, which the Kremlin described as “unprecedented.” New cooperation agreements are expected to be announced during the trip.

In addition, Xi met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, stating that China is “a source of stability and certainty” amid global changes and advocates restoring the authority of the United Nations.

Around 30 world leaders and representatives of international organizations are taking part in the summit.

China’s Foreign Ministry called the event “the largest in SCO history” and one of the key moments for Beijing’s diplomacy in 2025.

Participants are expected to adopt a number of documents on deepening cooperation in security, economy, and culture.
