Choosing a location for the cat litter box can affect not only the animal's comfort but also its health and behavior. A place in the home where placing the litter box is categorically not recommended has been named, according to the Good Housekeeping website.
Best place for the cat litter box
Veterinarian Rebeccaa said that the best place for the litter box is a quiet spot with few people, low stress, and some seclusion, yet easily accessible to the cat.
Usually, these are basements and bathrooms. The latter option is the best location, as the floor is generally easy to clean. Basements offer a similar advantage.
However, if the cat has mobility issues, navigating a large number of stairs can become an obstacle for it.
Also, if there are mice in the house, they may be attracted to the cat litter box. While a basement may be an ideal spot, it carries the risk that owners might miss some problems with the cat's urination or defecation.
Where not to place it
The worst place for the litter box is a high-traffic, bustling area, such as the kitchen, where your cat could become distracted or frightened.
“It's not the best idea to have basically a toilet in the middle of your kitchen,” Greenstein says.
Bedrooms are also not an option. An unpleasant odor could develop in the bedroom.
Furthermore, if you close the bedroom door, the cat could be locked outside without access to its litter box.
Who should not clean the cat litter box
Almost anyone can clean a cat litter box, but some people should avoid doing so or exercise extra caution due to the risk of infection with the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis.
At-risk groups include:
- Pregnant women – especially if they have not previously been exposed to the pathogen. A primary infection during pregnancy can be dangerous for the fetus. If possible, it is better to ask someone else to do the cleaning. If not, use disposable gloves, wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning, and clean the litter box daily.
- People with weakened immune systems – for them, toxoplasmosis can be significantly more severe.
- Young children – should not clean the cat litter box on their own.
