Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the likely new Prime Minister of Greenland, has rejected US President Donald Trump’s territorial claims regarding the island, asserting that Greenland seeks independence, The Hill reports.

Nielsen, leader of the Demokraatit party, which won the recent parliamentary elections in Greenland, opposed Trump’s repeated statements about his desire to buy Greenland.

"We don’t want to be Americans. No, we don’t want to be Danes. We want to be Greenlanders, and we want our own independence in the future. And we want to build our own country by ourselves," Nielsen said in an interview with Sky News.

The center-right party Demokraatit party won the recent parliamentary elections in Greenland. The party supports Greenland’s independence from Denmark but advocates for a gradual approach to this issue.

Dispute over Greenland

US President Donald Trump expressed his desire to purchase Greenland during his first term in office, and after returning to the White House, he renewed these discussions.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that the island is not for sale. Frederiksen and Trump had a conversation about this before his inauguration. According to sources, Trump was "aggressive and confrontational" on the matter of Greenland.

Recently, during a speech in Congress, Trump stated that the US would acquire Greenland "one way or another."
