US President Donald Trump set a two-week deadline for Ukraine and Russia to conclude a peace agreement, but it has already expired. However, it is not yet known whether the American leader plans to set a new deadline, stated White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during the briefing.

Answering the question whether the US President intends to set a new deadline for a peace deal during a conversation with the Russian leader, Leavitt said she did not want to get ahead of the events surrounding Trump's call to Putin.

"But he has made clear throughout the entirety of this conflict since he inherited it from Joe Biden. Don't forget, this is a war because of the previous administration's incompetence and weakness, and President Trump is working very hard to fix it. He has made it clear to both sides that he wants to see a peaceful resolution and a ceasefire as soon as possible, but as for specifics of a timeline, I won't get ahead of the President," Leavitt said.

She also spoke about Trump's phone call with Putin.

"I think, again, we'll see how the call goes, and the President has made it clear his goal is to see a ceasefire and to see this conflict come to an end. He’s grown weary and frustrated with both sides of the conflict. The President's team has put an enormous amount of effort in solving this very complicated war that began because of the last administration's weakness," Leavitt said.

Trump will call Putin and Zelenskyy

Following the May 16 talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul, US President Donald Trump announced plans to call Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Trump is expected to discuss the war in Ukraine as well as a range of other issues during the conversations.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that preparations for the call are underway. He later specified that the Trump-Putin call is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
