NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said there would be no winners in the Russian-Ukrainian war. According to him, the war will end with a peace deal based on compromise, Bloomberg reports.

On Thursday, November 5, Rutte was asked on the Dutch talk show Pauw & De Wit whether either side would win the war Russia launched against Ukraine in February 2022.

"I don’t think that’s very likely. These kinds of wars always end in a peace deal, which is often a kind of compromise," the NATO secretary general said.

He stressed that Europe must remain vigilant against potential Russian aggression even after the war in Ukraine ends.

"The Russian threat does not manifest directly at our border now, because a lot of those soldiers are busy in Ukraine. But if that’s finished, then their huge army won’t be there simply to be a huge army," Rutte explained.

The secretary general stressed that "we dream about a time when this is all over."

Mark Rutte also expressed "enormous admiration" for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, saying that they consult with each other every week.

At the same time, he added that it was important for US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to have a "good relationship."

Peace talks

A few days ago, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff announced that trilateral peace talks between Ukraine, the US, and Russia would take place in Abu Dhabi on November 10–11. The meeting is expected to address postwar security arrangements, de-escalation, and further steps toward peace.

According to another special envoy, Jared Kushner, Washington intends not only to end the war in Ukraine but also to create a broader security architecture to prevent hostilities from resuming.

Also, overnight, US President Donald Trump said that a major deal could be reached very soon as part of efforts to end the war in Ukraine, and that it would affect all of Europe, among other things.
