Will Kellogg's visit stop Russian missile strikes on Ukraine? Political analyst weighs in

Will Kellogg's visit stop Russian missile strikes on Ukraine? Political analyst weighs in Photo: US special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg (Vitalii Nosach, RBC-Ukraine).

Russia may intensify its attacks on Ukraine during the visit of US special envoy Keith Kellogg. That already happened in 2022, when German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was hiding in a shelter, political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko told RBC-Ukraine.

When asked whether the Russians will attack Ukraine during Kellogg's visit, the expert explained why it is not excluded.

"I will say, it is quite likely. It has happened before, for example, in 2022, when the German president was hiding in a bomb shelter. It was an important experience for him," the political scientist said.

He added that Keith Kellogg has already been to Ukraine and is well acquainted with the situation, and his daughter (ed. - Meaghan Mobbs) is actively volunteering in our country. But even despite the experience, direct contact with the attacks is of particular importance.

"Therefore, I do not exclude that there may be (ed. - massive strike). In any case, Russian air attacks on Ukraine, on Kyiv, have become regular," he said.

He added that the recent relative pause after 100 drones could quickly change to massive attacks using more than 400 drones, missiles and combined weapons.

"So it's quite likely that they will send that kind of greeting to Keith Kellogg. But I will tell you that this is also important. Because this tangible experience, when you encounter and see what an air attack is like... He can even be in a shelter... This is the experience that Keith Kellogg will not only get for himself, he has to pass it all on to Trump," Fesenko said.

He emphasized that such experience is much stronger than analytical reports in Washington.

"Because analytical reports that you read in Washington are one thing. But your own experience is much more powerful," the political scientist said.

Kellogg's visit to Ukraine

On Monday, July 14, US special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg arrived in Kyiv.

The topics for discussion will include defense, security, weapons, sanctions, protection of people, and strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and the United States.

Kellogg announced his visit to Kyiv earlier. He told Ukrainian media in Rome, where the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC 2025) was held last week.

Kellogg will be in Ukraine for a week.

Not his first visit

It is not the first time that Donald Trump's special envoy has visited Ukraine. Kellogg's last visit to Ukraine was in February and lasted two days. Read more about it in RBC-Ukraine's article.
