Will F-16s play key role in war this year: Expert opinion
This year, F-16 fighter jets, which Ukraine may receive as early as this summer, will not play a key role on the front lines, according to military expert and former spokesperson for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Vladyslav Seleznov, in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.
"A dozen or two will not radically change the situation. However, to some extent, they will enhance air defense capabilities and provide cover for operations both on land and in the waters of the Black and Azov Seas," the expert said.
Seleznov added that achieving parity with Russia would require 120-130 fighter jets.
F-16s for Ukraine
Last year, Ukraine's allies united to create an aviation coalition. The goal of this coalition is to provide Ukraine with F-16 fighters to assist in its fight against the Russian aggressor.
As part of this initiative, Ukraine will receive F-16s from the Netherlands, Denmark, and other partners. To ensure the successful use of these aircraft, Ukrainian pilots have already undergone training on the F-16.
Moreover, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin stated that the first F-16s will arrive in Ukraine with trained pilots and technical personnel.
Recently, it was reported that the first F-16 maintenance specialists have begun returning to Ukraine.
