Why Volhynia tragedy unites all Poles - Ukraine's ambassador explains

Historic reconciliation between Kyiv and Warsaw is possible only through constructive cooperation, systematic work on the exhumation of victims, and open dialogue, Vasyl Bodnar, Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland, says in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
According to Bodnar, the topic of the Volhynia tragedy remains sensitive and a matter of consensus for all political forces in Poland.
In particular, the issue of preserving the memory of the deceased and properly burying relatives holds fundamental importance for many Polish families.
"This is a consensus among all political forces in Poland. The issue of the Volhynia tragedy always arises in bilateral dialogue. Therefore, we must work on it constantly," Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland emphasized.
Bodnar also mentioned a recently adopted law by the Polish Sejm concerning the commemoration of Volyn victims.
The document received support from almost all deputies, which, in Bodnar's view, demonstrates the deep unity of Poland's political class on this issue.
The Ukrainian side, according to the diplomat, has already initiated practical steps, including exhumation work near Przemyśl, as well as institutional dialogue, including the restoration of a historians' forum.
Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland stressed that it is necessary not only to conduct archival research but also to present the results publicly - "without emotions, but with facts."
Forum of historians and public dialogue
In addition, a public dialogue forum has been created, involving journalists, politicians, historians, and public figures from both countries.
Bodnar emphasized that the conversation should not focus only on Polish victims. Ukraine is also interested in establishing the truth about crimes committed against Ukrainians on the territory of modern Poland.
"Crimes must be condemned, mutual apologies offered, and the memory of the dead honored. That is the foundation of reconciliation!," the Ukrainian ambassador believes.
