Why Svitolina is number one among Ukrainian tennis players? Facts

Before the start of the 2025 grass season, at tournaments in Nottingham, Berlin, and Wimbledon, Elina Svitolina had accumulated many achievements that confirmed her status as the most successful tennis player in Ukraine's history. Here is a selection of records of the most successful tennis player in our country.
Svitolina's top 6 achievements
Svitolina is the first and, so far, the only Ukrainian to win 100 Grand Slam matches. She reached this mark at the 2025 Australian Open in a second-round match against American Caroline Dolehide. Her first victory at the "Slam" was in 2013 at Roland Garros, and her anniversary victory was in Melbourne 12 years later.
The closest Ukrainian competitor, Andrii Medvedev, is behind by 37 matches won in "Grand Slams." Compatriot Lesia Tsurenko is in second place among women with 38 victories.

In terms of the number of matches won at the Grand Slam, Svitolina is the absolute record holder among Ukrainian tennis players. She has 27 victories at the Australian Open, 29 at Roland Garros, 20 at Wimbledon, and 24 at the US Open. No other Ukrainian tennis player has achieved such numbers—she has not won at least 20 victories at all four Grand Slam tournaments.
Elina is the only Ukrainian who has played in the semifinals of the Grand Slam tournaments three times. The last time was at Wimbledon 2023, when Svitolina returned to professional sports after a break of more than a year due to the birth of her daughter, Skai. She quickly regained her form and, within a few months, entered the top 30 in the WTA ranking, winning the title in Strasbourg.
In addition, Svitolina leads the list in terms of the number of victories over players from the top 10 of the WTA ranking. In her career, there are more than 40 such matches, including victories over the first rackets of the world.
A separate line in the statistics is her bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, which she won in 2021. She became the first and, so far, the only Ukrainian tennis player to win an Olympic medal.
On September 11, 2017, Svitolina reached third place in the WTA singles ranking—the highest level among all Ukrainian tennis players.
As of June 2025, Svitolina has won 15 victories in WTA clay series tournaments—this is the best indicator among all tennis players of the season and a personal record, surpassing the 2015 result (14 victories).

Earlier, we reported that Svitolina was nominated for a prestigious international award for her performances under the Ukrainian flag.
