An Olympic truce between Ukraine and Russia is impossible due to Moscow's cynicism and deceit, the Telegram channel SPRAVDI said.

SPRAVDI reminds that United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on Ukraine and Russia for a truce during the Summer Olympics in Paris from July 26 to August 11.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Pope Francis made similar calls.

"The Olympic truce is a beautiful and ancient tradition that dates back to antiquity. In 1993, the UN General Assembly recommended observing the truce during the period starting 7 days before the opening and ending 7 days after the closing of each Olympics," explains the Telegram channel.

Ukraine, for its part, honors Olympic traditions and has never initiated wars. At the same time, the Russian Federation has repeatedly engaged in armed conflicts shortly after the Olympic Games:

  • The attack on Georgia during the opening of the Summer Games in Beijing in 2008;
  • Aggression against Ukraine during the Winter Games in Sochi in 2014;
  • Full-scale invasion shortly after the Winter Games in Beijing in 2022.

"Moscow had no intention of adhering to the Olympic truce in 2024. For several weeks now, Russian troops have been intensifying their efforts to break through Ukrainian defenses, bombing and attacking Ukrainian cities with missiles," adds SPRAVDI.

Proposals for Olympic truce

In April, Macron proposed a halt to wars worldwide during the Paris Olympics.

The leadership of Ukraine expressed its position on this matter, noting that such agreements would hold no weight for the Russian Federation. Officials believe that the aggressor country could use the truce to further intensify its capture of Ukrainian territories.
