Germany will replace its ambassador to Ukraine. Heiko Thoms will head the diplomatic mission, Die Welt reports.

According to the outlet, the German government is expected to approve Thoms’ appointment on Wednesday, July 2.

He will replace Martin Jäger, who is set to become the new head of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND).

It is not yet clear exactly when Jäger will head the BND or when Thoms will officially take over as Germany’s ambassador to Ukraine.

Who is Heiko Thoms?

Heiko Thoms, 57, is an experienced diplomat. From 2020 to 2023, he served as Germany’s ambassador to Brazil, and before that, he was deputy head of Germany’s mission to NATO.

Until the recent change in government, Thoms also served as State Secretary in Germany’s Federal Ministry of Finance.

These appointments come just a few months after a change of Germany’s government, with the CDU/CSU alliance led by Friedrich Merz coming to power.
