Why fresh cucumbers wilt quickly and lifehack to refresh them
It often happens when you bring fresh cucumbers from the store and they quickly become soft. There are methods to help prolong their freshness and keep them crisp, according to the Express website.
How to store cucumbers
Cucumbers should be stored at room temperature, not in the refrigerator as many people do.
Cucumbers stay fresh longer at room temperature, while storage below 10°C causes damage.
In the refrigerator, they can stay crisp for a maximum of three days. Therefore, if they are in the refrigerator, you should eat them as soon as possible.
Also, do not put cucumbers on the bottom shelf, which is usually the coldest part of the refrigerator.
Store them separately from foods with a high ethylene content, such as bananas, tomatoes, and apples.
It is necessary to start selecting cucumbers for long-term storage at the stage of harvesting or buying them; stale, overripe cucumbers are not suitable for storage.
The skin should not have any damage, otherwise it will deteriorate quickly.
For long-term storage, it is better to take soil cucumbers rather than greenhouse cucumbers with dense skin.
What will help to refresh soft cucumbers
Fill a large bowl with cold water and add a few ice cubes. Then dip the cucumbers in it and wait for 15-30 minutes.
The cold is necessary to seal the flesh of the cucumber.
You can also put the cucumbers in a plastic bag, cover them with damp cheesecloth, and leave the bag open. Cucumbers packed in this way can stay fresh for about 10 days.
By wrapping each cucumber in a paper towel (napkin) and placing them in a cellophane bag, you can keep them fresh for up to 2 weeks.
