White House prepares for Iranian attack on Israel - Axios
The administration of US President Joe Biden believes that Iran is planning to attack Israel in response to the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier this week, according to Axios.
According to two US officials, it may take the Iranians and their proxies a few days to coordinate and prepare an attack on Israel. The officials expect the response to be similar to the April 13 attack on Israel, but likely more extensive. The Lebanese Islamic movement Hezbollah might also join the attack.
The Biden administration is concerned that it will be more challenging to mobilize a similar international and regional coalition to defend Israel against this attack due to the anti-Israeli sentiments sparked by Haniyeh's killing across the region.
Another US official stated that the Pentagon and US Central Command are conducting preparations similar to those made before the April attack. These preparations include deploying US forces in the Persian Gulf, Eastern Mediterranean, and Red Sea.
"We expect a few rough days," the official said.
Military strike by Iran on Israel
On July 31, the Israeli army eliminated one of the leaders of the Hamas group, Ismail Ghani, in Tehran, and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut.
Following these incidents, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered a direct military strike on Israel.
The US has declared its readiness to assist Israel in defending against drones and ballistic missiles from Islamist groups.
