Meta is testing a new WhatsApp feature that will soon allow users to link their social media accounts to their profile in the messaging app. A similar option is already available for business accounts, but this new development is aimed at regular users, the leading Apple news site 9to5Mac reports.

Update details

The function was discovered in the beta version of WhatsApp for iPhone. It is not yet available to users, but the report includes a screenshot showing how the new option will work. Essentially, WhatsApp users will be able to add links to their profiles on other social media platforms, allowing their contacts to visit them with a single tap.

"It seems that WhatsApp is committed to allowing users to further personalize their profile page, with the focus of enhancing user engagement and making profiles even more dynamic and informative. […] A new section will be available directly in the profile settings in the future, where users can choose whether to add links to their social media profiles," the report states.

Currently, in test mode, WhatsApp only allows linking an Instagram profile. However, before the official launch, support for other Meta platforms, such as Threads and Facebook, is expected to be added.

Unlike business accounts, where linking Instagram requires logging in for verification, the new beta version does not require confirmation. However, Meta may introduce a verification process before the official release to prevent misuse, such as impersonation.

The report also informs that the feature is “completely optional” and users can choose not to share their social media profiles with others.
