President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope for constructive cooperation with US President-elect Donald Trump following his inauguration on January 20. He emphasized the importance of shared visions for ending the war in Ukraine, reports President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview during a national telethon live broadcast.
Zelenskyy said he expects to meet with Donald Trump shortly after his inauguration. He acknowledged that Trump would focus on domestic issues initially but noted that Ukraine and the Middle East would remain priorities in his international policy.
"Trump told me, 'One of my first visits will be to meet with you.' He said his priority is to end the war, and he is committed to doing so," Zelenskyy said.
The Ukrainian president underscored that Trump's plan to end the war must align with Ukraine's vision.
"I want this plan, which Trump will propose, to align with our vision. There can be no alternative. We are Ukraine — this is our independence, land, and future," Zelenskyy stressed.
Zelenskyy also suggested that Trump's administration would engage in early contacts with Russia to examine the details of the conflict.
"The next steps must lead to ending the active phase of the war. This is a significant step forward for restoring society," he added.
In conclusion, Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of achieving a just peace.
"For us, it is crucial to have a just peace. We do not want to lose anything. But what will happen, I cannot say because much depends on our partners," the president remarked.
Trump's statements on ending the war in Ukraine
Notably, Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to end the war in Ukraine. During his campaign, he promised to resolve the conflict within 24 hours of taking office.
However, after winning the November 2024 election, Trump has refrained from making such bold statements about ending the war in Ukraine. Nevertheless, his team has been discussing various ideas.
