Russia wants any potential peace agreement with Ukraine to be based on the so-called "Anchorage formula." In particular, the initiative envisages territorial concessions by Ukraine, Reuters reports.

An unnamed source close to the Kremlin told the outlet that Moscow interprets the so-called "Anchorage formula" as follows:

  • Russia is establishing control over the entire Donbas;

  • Freezing the current front lines in other areas of eastern and southern Ukraine.

At the same time, Russian officials claim that these ideas were allegedly agreed upon during a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska.

"Anchorage formula"

Russian officials have been increasingly referring to the "Anchorage formula" in recent days.

In particular, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said after talks between Vladimir Putin and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff that peace with Ukraine should be based solely on the "Anchorage formula."

Meanwhile, on January 23, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to disclose the contents of the "Anchorage formula," saying it would be inappropriate to do so.

He also demanded the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the territory of Donbas.

The first trilateral talks involving Ukrainian, US, and Russian delegations at a technical level are scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on January 23–24.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already held consultations with the Ukrainian delegation ahead of the meeting.
