What happens if passenger dies on a plane: Uncensored truth

Death on a plane is an extremely rare occurrence, but airlines have a clear algorithm of actions for such situations. How do they handle a problem that arises in complete isolation, high in the sky? HuffPost explains the crew’s protocol in tragic cases.
When the unbelievable happens
Death on board a plane is a rare but possible event, for which airlines prepare in advance. The most difficult situations occur on long-haul routes where there is no opportunity for an emergency landing. Such cases remain extremely rare, but each one is a test for the entire team.
Passengers who witness the event may experience severe stress. That is why the crew’s emotional resilience is just as important as the clarity of their actions. All actions on board must be as careful and humane as possible.
What the crew does
After being informed of a passenger’s health deterioration, the crew first attempts to provide first aid. If a medical professional is among the passengers, they are asked to assist. If necessary, they contact doctors on the ground through special communication channels.
If all efforts fail, the flight attendants may stop resuscitation, although only a doctor has the right to declare death officially. At the same time, the crew must follow strict protocol and act with respect for the individual, regardless of the circumstances.
Many airlines have defibrillators, oxygen masks, and medical kits on board. Crew training includes preparation for such emergencies.

Where the body is placed on board
After resuscitation is stopped, the difficult question arises: what to do with the body? If there are vacant seats, it is moved to a less crowded row or an isolated section. If this is not possible, the person is left in their seat, fastened with a seatbelt, and covered with a blanket.
Passengers nearby are usually relocated. The crew uses disposable gloves and protective equipment to maintain hygiene. Some planes are equipped with special bags and isolation materials. It is important not only to respond correctly but also to preserve human dignity even under such circumstances.
What happens after landing
Upon arrival, the plane is met by appropriate services — medics, police, and sometimes consular representatives. If the death occurred during the flight, the body won't be moved out of the plane until the arrival of official personnel.
Other passengers are usually allowed to disembark first, and companions of the deceased are given time and space to say goodbye. After the incident, the airline may offer psychological support to both the family and the crew members.
All actions are documented, and the crew submits a report. For the workers, this is not just part of the instructions but a true test of emotional endurance.
