What and how to eat to feel happy: Harvard expert’s answer
There are many diets aimed at improving your health, but is there a specific way of eating that can boost or maintain happiness?
This question is answered by leading happiness expert Arthur Brooks.
What does happiness nutrition involve
According to Brooks, who also teaches a course on happiness management at Harvard University, eating food generally activates areas of the brain responsible for feelings of pleasure.
"But for the stimulation of this whole system to transcend mere pleasure and become a source of happiness, we need to experience enjoyment," he added.
Brooks has delved into various studies to gather elements of what he calls the ultimate happiness diet. He found that the enjoyment of food depends not on what you eat, but on how you eat.
One of the happiness factors related to food that Brooks highlights is the importance of sharing meals with others.
Research conducted in Asia shows that eating in company and creating memorable experiences during meals are associated with increased happiness.
Tips for happy eating
Vary the foods you eat, focusing on consuming more proteins and healthy fats rather than carbohydrates:
- moderate your alcohol intake;
- consume fewer processed foods, such as refined sweets and junk food;
- avoid obesity;
- eat at the same time each day and avoid eating on the go.
