Reducing appetite is a key goal for anyone aiming to bring their body weight to a healthy level. A trainer has shared an effective method that requires minimal effort, reports The Mirror.

How to reduce food cravings

Trainer Shayne Rowland explained that strong food cravings are often a sign that your body is lacking something.

“This could be a sign that your body hasn't had enough sleep. We know that when we are sleep deprived, the hormone ghrelin goes up, which is one of our hunger hormones, making us feel like more food and get more cravings. Even being slightly dehydrated can be confused as hunger, leading to cravings,” the expert noted.

Another common issue is insufficient protein intake, preventing you from feeling full. Additionally, consuming too few nutrients from food may signal that your body craves vitamins and minerals.

Focus on protein-rich sources such as eggs, lean poultry, dairy products, seafood, and fish.

If you notice sudden food cravings, it’s important to understand that reaching for a chocolate bar won’t solve the problem.

One technique you can try is called “urge surfing.” This involves resisting the desire to eat. While the craving might intensify at first, it will gradually subside over time.

Instead, engage in alternative activities to pass the time until the craving diminishes.

Suggested activities include:

  • Completing a task
  • Watching television
  • Calling a friend
  • Going for a walk
  • Playing a game
  • Solving a crossword puzzle
  • Reading a newspaper
  • Spending time on a hobby

What to avoid while eating

It’s easy to get distracted by a smartphone or television while eating. These distractions can lead to overeating, not just during the meal but throughout the day.

To avoid this, focus on your food without distractions. This will help you notice when you’re full and know when to stop eating.

Mindful eating can help distinguish between physical hunger and psychological or emotional hunger.

If you find yourself eating due to emotions, consider replacing food with a walk, exercise, or a cup of tea.
