Ukrainian undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has gained the opportunity to independently determine his next career move after defeating Daniel Dubois and continuing negotiations for the mandatory WBO title defense against Joseph Parker, writes Sky Sports.

Usyk gets a break for recovery

Undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk received an extension for negotiations regarding the mandatory WBO title defense against Joseph Parker. The decision was made after the Ukrainian cited an injury sustained in the fight with Dubois, which ended in a fifth-round knockout at Wembley Stadium.

Serhii Lapin, general director of Usyk's team, emphasized that the boxer and his team have always respected all potential opponents and the rules of professional boxing.

"Over the past year and a half, Usyk has accomplished a historic achievement by becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion twice. That demanded tremendous physical and mental effort, and great sacrifice," Lapin added.

Time to rest and choose the path

The champion has been given the right to choose his next career step and take time to recover after the exhausting training process and injuries. Lapin stressed that Usyk deserves rest and the opportunity to spend time with his family.

Nevertheless, to retain the WBO title, Usyk's next opponent must be the mandatory challenger Joseph Parker. However, the 38-year-old Ukrainian can relinquish the belt or be stripped of the title if he decides not to take the fight.

Possible alternatives for Usyk

After defeating Dillian Whyte in the first round, British contender Moses Itauma has also entered the pool of potential Usyk opponents.

"Honestly, I will fight anyone they put in front of me. If I be completely honest, Joseph Parker [and Agit] Kabayel do deserve the shot [at Oleksandr Usyk] but I would love to take the opportunity as well," the boxer stated.

Parker's promoter, David Higgins, noted that Usyk's team allegedly shows no activity in negotiations, creating the impression that the Ukrainian does not intend to defend the WBO title.

"There is no noise, no engagement, no negotiation from Usyk's team. All thinking and wisdom is that Usyk doesn't want to defend his WBO world title. That is the feeling," said Parker's promoter.
