A major controversy has erupted around the upcoming fight between undisputed world champion Oleksandr Usyk and kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven. It turns out that earlier announcements of the mega-fight contained a significant error that changes the bout's status in Egypt, according to WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman's statement to Boxing Scene.
'Special event'
Following the announcement of the mega-fight set for May 23 in Giza, Egypt, the boxing community erupted in debate over the possible defense of the WBC title against an athlete from another sport.
However, Sulaiman clarified that there had been a mix-up. According to him, the WBC fully supports the crossover bout but considers it strictly a "special event."
"At this moment, there has not been discussion of a request to be a title defense. It's just a special event involving the WBC heavyweight champion," the official emphasized.
Exclusive pyramid-themed belt
Instead of an official world championship belt, the organization will present a unique commemorative trophy to the winner. The WBC will create a ceremonial belt decorated with elements inspired by the Egyptian pyramids.
Sulaiman drew a parallel to the Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou fight, which was also classified as a "special event" but proved to be highly competitive.

Fight's importance for Usyk
Usyk remains the holder of the WBC, WBA, and IBF belts. Since the bout against Verhoeven is not a title fight, the Ukrainian champion faces no risk of losing his accolades regardless of the outcome.
However, this type of matchup allows Usyk to maintain media visibility and stay in shape between mandatory defenses in professional boxing.
Rico Verhoeven is a legendary heavyweight kickboxing world champion, and this fight will be one of the most high-profile challenges of his career under traditional boxing rules.
Previously, the media reported that Manny Pacquiao challenged the undefeated Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas.
