Warren Buffett charity tops list of biggest 2023 donations
The Chronicle of Philanthropy listed the largest donations in 2023, totaling more than $3.5 billion. Well-known American investor Warren Buffett is at the top, giving $541.5 million for women's reproductive health and college scholarships in Nebraska, according to AP News.
The list comprises 11 gifts due to ties, involving eight multibillionaire donors with a combined net worth of $305.1 billion. Notable gifts went to universities, research institutes, and a healthcare system, with other contributions supporting a family foundation and a racial justice group.
Buffett gave $541.5 million in Berkshire Hathaway stock to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named after his first wife, who passed in 2004, dedicated to women's reproductive health and college scholarships in Nebraska, as his family comes from this state.
Other donations
Mathematician James Simons and his wife, Marilyn, secured the second spot with a $500 million donation to the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Ross Brown pledged $400 million to the California Institute of Technology for the Brown Institute for Basic Sciences, supporting scientific research.
Nike cofounder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny, pledged $400 million to the 1803 Fund for Rebuild Albina in Portland, Oregon. A project aimed at revitalizing the historic Albina area, once a thriving Black neighborhood.
Daniel and Jennifer Gilbert donated $375 million to Henry Ford Health for two medical centers, and financier Kenneth Griffin gave $300 million to Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The Chronicle’s rankings, based on the 10 largest public gifts, exclude artwork or anonymous contributions. The forthcoming March release will feature the annual ranking of the 50 biggest donors, focusing on total contributions in 2023 rather than individual gifts.
