Warning shots fired after North Korea provocation at border, media say

South Korean troops fired warning shots after a group of North Korean soldiers crossed the land border between the two countries. The North Korean troops immediately returned to their side, Yonhap reports.
Border incident details
According to the outlet, the incident occurred last week in an eastern frontline area of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL). A group of North Korean soldiers crossed the border while patrolling the demilitarized zone.
In response, South Korean troops followed established operational procedures:
- Warning broadcasts are issued first if North Korean forces approach the demarcation line
- Warning shots are then fired if they actually cross the border.
After the shots were fired, the North Korean troops withdrew, and no other unusual activity was detected in the area.
These were the first warning shots fired by the South Korean military in response to a border violation in 2026.
Context, escalating tensions
The situation along the inter-Korean border remains tense.
North Korean troops have regularly made brief incursions across the demarcation line in recent years as they actively build and reinforce defensive fortifications on their side.
As previously reported, Seoul has been seeking to reduce military tensions through diplomatic initiatives. In particular, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung called on North Korea to begin talks to sign a permanent peace agreement to replace the current armistice.
At the same time, North Korean authorities continue to use aggressive rhetoric toward their neighbors and their allies.
Earlier, North Korea warned that the threshold of nuclear war was approaching because of joint US-South Korean military exercises, threatening to exercise its right to self-defense.
