Avocados and walnuts are often grouped as “brain foods,” but they support brain health in different ways. Avocados provide healthy fats that support brain function, while walnuts help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, according to Verywell Health.
Avocados support brain function
Avocados contain several nutrients that help maintain brain structure and function, largely thanks to their healthy fats and antioxidant compounds.
They are rich in monounsaturated fats, fiber, and especially lutein — a carotenoid that accumulates in brain tissue and is linked to better memory, faster information processing, and improved attention.
The fruit also naturally contains glutathione, the body’s main antioxidant, which helps protect brain cells from free radical damage.
One study published on PubMed found that overweight and obese adults who ate avocado daily for three months increased their lutein levels and showed improved concentration.
Walnuts help reduce brain inflammation
Walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid, polyunsaturated fats, polyphenols, and other antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress — two key drivers of cognitive decline.
A study published in the journal Nutrients found that regular walnut consumption is associated with better memory, improved motor coordination, and a lower risk of dementia and other brain disorders.
Walnuts may be better for brain health
Both foods are beneficial, but walnuts appear to have an edge when it comes to effectiveness.
“From a research standpoint, walnuts have the most consistent and long-term evidence for protecting against cognitive aging, reducing neuroinflammation, and supporting people at risk of mild cognitive impairment,” said dietitian and nutritionist Taiyba Mogal.
How much should you eat?
Experts recommend eating a small handful of walnuts per day — about 30–50 grams.
Meanwhile, eating around half an avocado provides a significant dose of nutrients that support brain function.
