Habits that have become part of many people’s daily lives can quietly harm brain function, impairing memory and concentration. What should be avoided to maintain cognitive health is explained below, according to the Eating Well.

Neglecting proper sleep

Doctor of Medical Sciences and neurologist Kimberley Idoko says that during sleep, the brain performs essential functions for optimal functioning.

Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to reduced cognitive performance and an increased risk of neurological diseases. Ongoing lack of sleep can have cumulative negative effects, which are associated with accelerated brain aging.

Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea can also impair cognitive health, affecting memory consolidation, emotional regulation, vascular health, and the brain’s overnight cleansing system.

Sitting too much and skipping physical activity

Prolonged sitting without movement can negatively affect brain health. Low levels of aerobic activity reduce cerebral blood flow, metabolic health, and vascular resilience.

Physical activity helps maintain blood circulation, including blood flow to the brain, and is associated with better cognitive performance.

Neurologist David Perlmutter explains that passive activities such as endless scrolling or mindless TV watching do not challenge the brain. Over time, this lack of stimulation signals the brain to reduce its functional activity.

Excessive smartphone use

This can place significant strain on the brain. Constant digital input keeps the brain in a state of high alert. Attention becomes fragmented, and the conditions necessary for memory and emotional regulation are not fully formed.

The brain does not perform two complex tasks simultaneously; instead, it switches between them, which requires attention and resources. This reduces memory efficiency.

Eating large amounts of ultra-processed foods

Diets high in ultra-processed foods and added sugars are linked to inflammation and metabolic changes that may affect cognitive function.

Frequent consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with increased oxidative stress and inflammation, including in the brain. These metabolic effects can impair glucose regulation and reduce energy efficiency, which may manifest as brain fog and decreased cognitive endurance.

Ignoring hearing problems

Hearing is an often underestimated aspect of cognitive health, but it plays an important role in how the brain processes information.

With untreated hearing loss or repeated exposure to loud noise, the brain has to work harder to decode sound, increasing cognitive load and potentially reducing social activity. Both factors are linked to faster cognitive decline.
